Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 splash milk or favorite milk alternative Only if yams are dry.

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large saucepan, combine the cubed yams, ground cinnamon, salt, and water.
  2. Cover the saucepan and bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat.
  3. Once bubbling, reduce heat to low and continue cooking.
  4. Check the yams after about 15 minutes, adding another 1/4 cup of water if it appears dry.
  5. Continue to cook, covered, for an additional 5 minutes or until fork-tender.
  6. Remove the lid and let them sit for about 3 minutes, allowing excess moisture to evaporate.
Mashing
  1. Add the tablespoon of butter and pepper, then mash the yams using a potato masher or fork.
  2. If they seem dry, add a splash of milk or preferred milk alternative until creamy.

Notes

For a unique twist, consider adding nutmeg or ginger. Substitute butter with cream cheese or Greek yogurt for tang. Mash less thoroughly for a rustic style.
