Method
Cupcake Preparation
- In a measuring cup, combine the whole milk and white vinegar. Stir gently and set aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together all-purpose flour, black cocoa powder, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
- To the bowl containing dry ingredients, add the milk and vinegar mixture, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract. Whisk together until smooth.
- Carefully fill each cupcake liner in your tin with the batter, filling them no more than two-thirds full.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for 15 to 20 minutes.
- Let the cupcakes cool in the tin for 5 to 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
Frosting Preparation
- In a large bowl, combine softened unsalted butter, powdered sugar, and salt. Mix on low speed until the sugar is dissolved.
- Add 3 tablespoons of whole milk and pure vanilla extract. Mix on low until combined, then whip at medium-high speed until light and fluffy.
- Reserve over half a cup of frosting for the chocolate witch hats. Use the remaining frosting to pipe or spread onto the cooled cupcakes.
Oreo Hat Preparation
- Separate the Oreo cookies and discard the fillings. Place the cookies smooth side up on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Using a piping bag fitted with a plain tip, pipe a frosting cone onto each Oreo cookie.
- Transfer the cookies to the freezer for about 30 minutes until the frosting is firm.
- Melt the semi-sweet or dark chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl using short bursts. Allow it to cool slightly.
- Dip each Oreo hat into the melted chocolate, coating completely. Shake off excess chocolate.
- Freeze the chocolate-coated hats for another 10 to 15 minutes until set.
Assembly
- Place the chocolate witch hats on top of each frosted cupcake.
