Preparation
- In a large bowl, mix together the grated onion, breadcrumbs, egg, kosher salt, and black pepper.
- Add the ground beef to the mixture and combine well, then divide into four portions and shape into oval patties.
Cooking the Patties
- Heat a large skillet over high heat for about 2 minutes until searing hot.
- Add olive oil to the hot pan and place the patties in it; cook for about 2 minutes on each side until browned.
- Remove the patties and set aside.
Making the Gravy
- In the same skillet, melt the butter and add sliced mushrooms, cooking until golden and fragrant.
- Sprinkle flour over the mushrooms, stirring and cooking for about 1 minute.
- Pour in beef broth while stirring to blend the flour, bring to a simmer, and let flavors meld.
Final Assembly
- Add the browned patties back into the gravy and let them simmer uncovered for 5 minutes or until cooked through.
Notes
For enhanced flavor, add Worcestershire sauce or garlic powder to the beef mixture. Avoid overcrowding the pan while searing for better results.
