Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 2 lbs ground beef Juicy and richly flavored.
  • 1 tsp creole seasoning Adds a delightful kick.
  • 1 onion, chopped Adds depth to the dish.
  • 1 cup rice, uncooked Provides texture and absorbs flavors.
  • 3 handfuls cabbage, roughly chopped Fresh and packed with nutrients.
  • 1 8 oz can tomato sauce Ties all flavors together.
  • 2 cups water Ensure the rice cooks and cabbage softens.
  • 1 14 oz can diced tomatoes, undrained Infuses dish with color and taste.
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (Colby Jack) Creates a creamy topping.

Method

Cooking Instructions
  1. Start by adding the ground beef to a large saucepan. Season with approximately 1 teaspoon of Creole seasoning and cook over medium-high heat.
  2. Once the beef is mostly browned, add the chopped onions and cook until translucent, about 3-5 minutes. Drain off excess grease.
  3. Add the rice, chopped cabbage, tomato sauce, water, and undrained diced tomatoes. Stir everything together until well combined.
  4. Increase the heat to bring the mixture to a gentle boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium-low and cover the pot.
  5. Allow the casserole to simmer for about 20 to 30 minutes without lifting the lid.
  6. Once the cooking time is up, top with shredded cheese, cover, and let sit for a few minutes until the cheese melts.

Notes

For extra flavor, add minced garlic with the onion. For nutrition, toss in additional vegetables like bell peppers or spinach. For a spicier kick, add hot sauce or more Creole seasoning.
