Preparation
- In a large frying pan, heat the canola oil over medium-low heat. Add the chopped onions and green peppers, sautéing for about 5 minutes until they begin to soften and become aromatic.
- Move the sautéed onions and peppers to the outer edge of the pan, and increase the heat to medium-high.
- Spread the ground beef evenly in the center of the pan and allow it to cook undisturbed for about 5 minutes until the meat starts to brown.
- Season the beef with salt and pepper, then flip the meat to cook the other side. Break the meat apart into smaller pieces, and cook until no longer pink, about 2-3 minutes.
- Lower the heat to medium-low and add the ketchup, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and sugar. Stir everything together and let it cook for 2-3 minutes until the flavors meld.
- Serve the Sloppy Joe mixture onto burger buns, brioche buns, or potato rolls.
Notes
Use leaner meat if desired and consider adding spices for extra kick. Serve with classic coleslaw, potato chips, pickles, or baked beans. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days or freeze the mixture for up to 3 months.
